Synopsis
Set in 1894, The Other Boy follows Edmund Blake, a reserved court stenographer plagued by obsessive routines and buried memories. When a routine transcription job leads him back to an orphanage he does not recall attending, the tightly wound threads of his mind begin to fray. Strange visions, childish drawings, and ghostly visitations unravel a truth long suppressed: Edmund had a twin brother, sacrificed in a ritual orchestrated by their mother, a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. As the veil between memory and haunting dissolves, Edmund must face the mirrored self he has denied.
With echoes of M.R. James and Henry James, The Other Boy brings together gothic horror and psychological depth, while exploring themes of identity, repression, and the occult.
Writing this story has felt like coming full circle—a way of honouring the haunting beauty of those old Victorian voices that first welcomed me, and of reflecting on the years that have shaped me as a writer here in the UK.
